During VMworld in San Francisco, VMware showed off new versions of Workstation, Player and Fusion. Today, these products went GA and are available for download.

VMware Workstation 10

VMware Workstation takes virtualization to the next level:

  • Support for the latest Guest OS’es like Microsoft Windows 8.1 and various Linux distributions.
  • The new hardware version 10 introduces even bigger and better Virtual Machines
    Up to 16 vCPUs
    64GB of vRAM
    8TB disks.
    vSATA support has been added
Up to 20 networks can be defined.
Various USB improvements (usb3 stream support, among other things)
SSD pass through makes for better support of the underlying hardware platform.
  • New Virtual Appliances created with the Workstation team to quickly run various cloud stacks like Pivotal, Puppet Labs and Vagrant.

The Workstation team always has some cool trick up their sleeve. In this version, it’s tablet sensor support (stuff like the accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and ambient light sensor) and the ability to create and manage expiration dates for individual virtual machines.

The team has included various smaller improvements in the product as well:

  • Better multi-monitor support for up to 4 screens
  • Unity mode has been enhanced to seamlessly work with Windows 8.1 UI changes
  • An updated version of VMware Converter has been built in and adds support for P2V’ing a Windows 8.1 machine
  • New option to display the VM console using VMware-KVM, a ‘screen-only’ window without any bells or whistles.

Workstation will sell for $249, with an upgrade path from previous versions (v8 and v9) for $119. For those who have purchased Workstation 9 between August 1st and September 30th are eligible for a free downloadable upgrade to VMware Workstation 10.

VMware Player 6

VMware has introduced a new edition of Player called ‘Player Plus‘. This version is licensed for commercial use and can run restricted (time-bombed) virtual machines created by Workstation 10 and Fusion 6 Professional. This version is specifically aimed at running managed desktops on any PC, workstation or laptop. Even more so, the target audience is those still in need for running Windows XP (corporate desktop; newer hardware support for XP is diminishing) and educational environments (IT trainers,  students, etc.).

VMware Player 6 Plus will retail for $99.99 and is only available via the VMware Online Store. Upgrades to Workstation ($149.99) and Fusion Professional ($29.99) are available. The non-Plus edition remains to be available for free for personal use.

VMware Fusion 6

Some real work has gone into version 6 of VMware Fusion. With over 50 new features and improvements, it’s a major new release. The list is impressive:

  • Revamped full screen support designed for OS X Mavericks and multiple displays. Also works with OS X Lion and Mountain Lion.

  • Optimized for the latest iteration of Macs
