I am trying to use ADBO myself and literally stumbled across your article. I have Equallogic PS SAN with vSphere5 and would like to get this working… So far no luck.

Hi Jason,

The RDM is presented to the host first, and ‘routed’ to the guest VM. This means that you do need to present the RDM to each and every host in your cluster in order for vMotion to actually work.

If you are in any way limited to the number of LUNs you can present to the physical hosts, you could consider using in-guest iSCSI (using the software Microsoft iSCSI Initiator from within the Guest OS inside the VM, for instance). This way, you still have vMotion compatibility without having to present the LUN to all physical hosts.

Hi Steve,

No, you really need the ADBO; AOFO won’t work. In fact: the ADBO and AOFO are mutually exclusive: you can’t use the AOFO if you’re using the ADBO.

Great post on the RDMs, however one question I have is how they are treated by an ESX farm in relation to the maximum number of LUNs.

We have a 20 server farm (just one of our farms). Our service service provider is telling us that to enable a guest to vMotion the RDM has to be presented to all hosts in the farm, effectively making it 20 LUNs for the purposes of the number of LUNs we can present.

Is this correct or does the RDM itself only need to be mapped once and it just moves with the guest as vMotion moves the guest ?
